CBL Series One Articles

WARNING!!! Articles to be read before or after our CBL conversation. BUT DO NOT read these articles BEFORE you watch the film for the first time. Do not let other viewers’ interpretations get in the way of your initial experience — even if those viewers are considered “experts.” Your experience of the film is the most important one and the one that these conversations will HONOR.

Sunrise: A Song of Two Humans. F.W. Murnau. 1928

QUESTIONS TO CONSIDER BEFORE AND AFTER YOU WATCH THIS FILM:

  • How does this “telling” of trouble in a young marriage and love story compare with more modern films dealing with these issues?
  • What did you observe about camera movement and angles? How did this approach to filming affect you emotionally — what was the feeling?
  • Notice how shots are set up and movement within the shot. Can you describe how this mise en scene is not something you would see in current films. What do you see is different?

L’ Atalante. Jean Vigo. 1934. UNDER CONSTRUCTION
